Phillip Douglas Howerton, editor of Literature of the Ozarks: an Anthology, will open the author fair on Friday, March 1 at 6 p.m. in the Library Theater. Dr. Howerton will introduce his book published by the University of Arkansas Press and read poetry from his book, The History of Tree Roots. Professor Howerton is the chairman of the English Department of Southern Missouri University in West Plains. While Professor Howerton is from the academic world, he “is a sixth-generation Ozarker and was brought up on a small dairy farm in southern Dallas County, Missouri. After spending several years as a milk truck driver, beef farmer, and production worker, he earned degrees in English, history, and education from Drury University and a doctorate in American literature and rhetoric and composition from University of Missouri-Columbia.” In addition, he is an editor of literary magazines and his poetry has appeared in other publications.
